Equestrian

Equestrian groundwork excavation is a crucial initial step in constructing arenas, stables, paddocks, and other horse-related facilities. This process involves the careful removal and preparation of soil to create a stable, level base that supports safe and functional equestrian surfaces. Proper groundwork ensures longevity, minimizes maintenance, and provides a safe footing for horses, which is essential for both performance and injury prevention.

The first stage typically involves site assessment and planning. Soil testing may be conducted to determine drainage capacity and stability. Areas with poor natural drainage often require additional engineering, such as French drains or geotextile membranes, to prevent water accumulation that can lead to muddy or unstable surfaces.

Once the site is cleared of vegetation and debris, excavation begins. The depth of excavation varies depending on the intended use but generally ranges from 6 to 18 inches. This depth accommodates multiple layers, including a sub-base of compacted crushed stone, a drainage layer, and the riding surface (often sand, rubber, or fiber mix).

Precision is vital in ensuring proper grading and slope, usually with a slight incline (1–2%) to facilitate water runoff. Laser-guided equipment may be used for accuracy in larger arenas. During excavation, care is taken to avoid disturbing the underlying natural soil structure excessively, which could compromise drainage.

After excavation and grading, the site is compacted to provide a firm foundation. Failing to adequately compact the base can result in uneven footing, leading to safety hazards for both horse and rider.

In summary, groundwork excavation is foundational to any equestrian facility. It demands a balance of technical skill, understanding of soil and drainage dynamics, and attention to the specific needs of equestrian sports. A well-executed excavation lays the groundwork—literally—for a durable, safe, and high-performing equestrian environment.

We can supply and install all weather sand school’s and arena’s with various types of riding surfaces. Drainage is a very important part in the construction of an arena, with years of experience we have designed a bespoke drainage field to install under the surface ensuring good draining over the whole arena and improving the riding experience. We can supply the whole or part arena from the earthworks and fencing to the final riding surface.

We also have a specially designed bucket on our excavators to revitalise an old or disused arena
